Shift

At the sound of a fight breaking out, I call my wings forward and launch straight into the air. My brother is in trouble and my pulse is thundering in my ears with the need to find him. The rooftop of the apartment building is long and flat and when I rise over the crest of the half wall, I see him.

The lion soldier.

The alpha feline enemy is here, and he’s not alone. I tap the communication device in my ear. “Three soldiers. Apartment rooftop.”

That’s all the time I have before I’m charged, and the battle Flash is waging spills over on me.

Get down!

Flash’s words echo in my head, and I drop to the ground and dive behind a metal stack without question. The tat-tat-tat of gunfire hitting metal behind me reminds me they have ammunition that takes us down.

In the last battle, I grabbed one of their guns and took them down instead.

Flash shouts and I roll to my feet. They aren’t the only ones with guns. Gripping the phaser hanging across my chest, I vault straight into the air and target a fierce female about to round the corner of my hiding place and close in on me.

I fire two shots in quick succession, and she’s knocked back. She almost goes over the low wall that borders the rooftop, but no such luck.

I catch sight of Flash throwing himself to the ground as the feline’s claws swipe through the night air and narrowly miss him.

“Mac!” I call out, my heart pounding as a red Sith cat launches up the stairwell, his muscles rippling beneath his sleek coat. He leaps at the lion man, their snarls and roars filling the room.

I move to help, but I’m thrown back by a dark elf with a scar across his forehead. Dammit. “Flash, help Mac. I’ve got the elf.”

Rolling to my feet, I scramble to get the phaser back into my hand. The dark elf doesn’t give me the chance. He lunges forward, his twin swords glinting menacingly in the dim light.

I lurch back, barely getting out of reach, as the blades whistle past my head. As he comes at me again, Flash fires a shot toward us and hits one of the elf’s hands. When he drops the sword, I retrieve it.

Now we’re equally armed.

My thoughts race as I fight. How is Mac? Is Flash watching over him? I catch glimpses of them from the corner of my eye, their movements a blur of red fur and ebony mane.

My opponent seems to sense my distraction and presses his advantage. He comes at me like a whirling cyclone, forcing me back on the defensive. I refuse to be overwhelmed.

I parry his blows and search for an opening, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Mac’s cat lets off a vicious snarl, followed by a roar from his feline foe.

“On your left,” Tundra says, swooping into the fray. The ivory winged Elbirfae targets the elf coming at me and twists the moment before they collide, his wing taking the brunt of the attack.
